Friday, February 2nd

Cabernet vs. Merlot BLIND…!! We’ll present a delicious array of wines featuring 2 of the world’s top red wine varietal…2 of the main red grapes that make up the famous wins of Bordeaux, France. Classic pedigreed (and quite expensive $$$$) wines such as Chateau Lafite Rothschild, Chateaux Margaux, Chateaux Latour, Chateau Haut Brion…etc. all basically blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.. (and several other allowed grape varieties…) but Cab and Merlot are the 2 main grapes…

We’ll bag the wines up and taste them BLIND.

There will be a voting tally in front of each bagged bottle, and you can vote for whether you think the wine in each bagged bottle is Merlot or Cabernet.

We unveil the wines after most folks have voted…usually around 6:30

Join the fun…test your skills of discerning the difference between these 2 giants of the wine world.

So often we hear from people who say they either love Cabernet and hate Merlot…or vice versa… we hope to put that to the taste…ah…we mean test

A dazzling array of Pinots, from Oregon, California and France (these wines pictured here are not necessarily the ones we will be tasting tho…)

Friday, January 6th, 2023… “Mutt Reds”/Hair of the Dog

“Hair of the Dog” Red Blends…we refer to as “Mutt Reds”…good doggy!

There are many “official red blends”…Bordeaux Blends (generally Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Malbec, Petit Verdot…and even Carmenere…the “Lost Bordeaux Grape”…now found again...) any other grape variety, however…takes this blended red…although possibly quite delicious..out of the category of Bordeaux Blend, if any other grape variety is used…such as Sangiovese, Syrah, Petite Sirah…or Pinot Noir…it’s NOT a Bordeaux Blend)

The same is true for Tuscan-Style Blends…usually mostly Sangiovese, with perhaps some other allowed and traditional Tuscan/Chianti grapes such as Canaiolo…however, since more “international grape varieties” were allowed to be blended into Chianti around 20 years ago or so…in order to “beef up” Chianti and improve the overall quality…Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot and/or Syrah can be added to official DOC and DOCG Chianti…the term of Tuscan Reds is somewhat broader…; Rhone Style Blends…generally Grenache/Syrah Mourvedre…maybe Cinsault or Counoise…but one you add some Cab…Merlot, Sangiovese…NOT a Rhone Style Blend…we know…this info is all getting a bit “Wine Geeky” but dems da rules…

So…we informally refer to any such non-traditional Belend sometimes as a “Mutt Red” …a creative approach by the winemaker to assemble a delicious blend…without the parameters of classic, traditional grape varietals being used.

Being as this is the 1st tasting after NEW YEARS EVE Revelry…and perhaps a bit of overindulgence…we feel it is only appropriate to present an array of these delicious, yet untraditional reds we refer to as Mutt Reds…and Csll this one “Hair Of The Dog” Reds.

Hope you got to join us for this 1st Tasting of the New Year…Friday, January 6th, 2023…Cheers!

Friday,  December 16th, 2023: Hope you didn’t miss this one…

Friday, November 4th, 2022. Argentina & Chile

Wines from the Southern Hemisphere and we explored some fabulous offerings from these storied vineyards and wineries…remember too…that Argentina and Chile had planted classic European grape varietals in around the 1850’s, and Phylloxera (the vine killing disease that effected much of Europe in the 1870’s), did not effect the vineyards of Argentina and Chile, so many of their vines are on original root stock!  More on this at the tasting…

And of course…we all know that Argentina is quite famous for a plethora of delicious reds made from the Malbec grape!!! We will be tasting a few of those…as well as some of their cabernets, and a few crisp, dry whites as well!! Such as Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon Chardonnay, Viognier and a uniquely Argentinian white wine made from the Torrontes grape!

Chile, while quite well known for some world class Cabernet’s…is also quite proud of their Carmenere…The “Lost Bordeaux Grape”…more on that at the tasting!

Bordeaux compared to West Coast Cab/Merlot Blends….Chardonnay compared to white Burgundy…Sauvignon Blanc compared to White Bordeaux or Loire Valley white….Domestic GSM Red Blend (Grenache/Syrah/Mourvedre Blend) compared with a true Southern Rhone red such as Cotes Du Rhone…Lirac, Gigondas or maybe even a Chateauneuf du Pape…then perhaps a nice Chianti compared to a domestic Sangiovese…

And last, but not least..Mourvèdre. “South of France”…??

Wines from “Minervois”, Languedoc, Corbieres, Costieres de Nimes…etc.

October 21st: Wine 102, Further Explorations and Investigations….another educational and fun tasting comparison of “Old World” Traditional Wines vs. their “New World” counterparts.

People have been urging me for a long time to run some Wine Education Classes again….I did a series of them years ago…and alas…fell off a bit.

So I’ve decided to intersperse some “comparative Educational Tastings” into our regular schedule for now…and it may spin off into more complex investigations…

So…what is WINE 101?? and WINE 102??

1ST TASTING OF THE 2016/2017 Season:

WINE 101:    Friday, October 7th, 2016

People have been urging me for a long time to run some Wine Education Classes again….I did a series of them years ago…and alas…fell off a bit.

So I’ve decided to intersperse some “comparative Educational Tastings” into our regular schedule for now…and it may spin off into more complex investigations…

One might ask…

We will attempt to “demystify” some of the World’s Greatist Wines by tasting them, compared with their “New World” counterparts…such as Bordeaux vs. a nice Washington Cabernet/Merlot/Cabernet Franc Blend

A lovely Cotes du Rhone; Vacquyeras..Chateauneuf du Pape with a “New World” GSM Blend (Grenache/Syrah/mourvedre)

A crisp Classic Sancerre from France’s Loire Valley vs. a

Domestic Sauvignon Blanc

A Classic White Burgundy vs. a Domestic Chardonnay

you get the picture…Fun tastings…and “by God”, you will learn something too…

In WINE 102WE WILL FURTHER EXPLORE AND INVESTIGATE OLD WORLD WINES, and compare, taste (of course) and contrast them with their New World Counterparts!

e.g. Vouvray vs ‘New World” Chenin Blanc; Rioja vs. “New World” Tempranillo, etc.

(Hope you didn’t miss one.)

Friday May 1st: MALBEC

We explored the world of Malbec (Including an array of Cahors from Southwest France…the Original Malbec)

Yes, of course Argentina makes Malbec, and has pretty much been running with it as their main “Identity Wine” Even tho they make some lovely Cabs as well…and there was a time in history where an obscure Italian Varietal, Bonarda, was the main grape of Argentina.. ..still some available, but certainly eclipsed by the Malbec Mania.

We will have a few Washington Malbecs as well.

“Call Me A Cab” man…no, not ’cause I may have had a little too much…I’m just saying that, with all the great Rhones, Spanish and Italian wines we love, promote, offer here and enjoy, I still consider myself, in some dark recess of my heart, to be a bit of a “Cab Man”, and so it’s time to taste, compare and enjoy an array of Cabernets. Mostly from Washington and California…maybe some Chilean and Argentinian…maybe even Spain and/or Italy…(Most Cabernet from France is part of a Bordeaux red) 5:30 (but ok too show up anytime up to around 7:00ish) shop open till at least 8:00, often later. $10pp, 1/2 for Wineaux Club members, and FREE, if you buy 3* Cabernet Sauvignon, The “King of Red Wine Grape Varietals”!!!

March 6th

GARNACHA / GRENACHE

We just love this delicious red grape varietal. So versatile and expressive, although we don’t see many from our shores…yet…Joe just opened another very reasonably price Spanish Garnacha Monday evening with his dinner and thought, “what a wonderful wine, wine not taste an array and really explore this

Grenache and Garnacha

Grenache  ( as it’s called in France and the US)  Garnacha and or Garnaxta from Spain and Navarra in the Basque country, and Cannonau as it’s called from Sardinia, Italy. We’ll taste all 3.

Grenache is one of the main grapes in the famous Chateauneuf du Pape reds of the Southern Rhone, and it is a main grape in many Cotes du Rhones, Vacqyueras and Gigondas reds as well.

there’s a wide range from soft, easy-drinking versions in the 12% or so alcohol range, to bigger, darker, bolder versions that can top out in the 15% alc. range.

You don’t see much of this from Washington and California, but we will maybe have 1 or 2

Friday, February 20thPinot Noir  Oregon, California, France, maybe Chile and/or Argentina too! The classic French Burgundy (Bourgogne) grape is one of our faves, and we haven’t done a Pinot tasting yet this Wine Tasting Season.

January 16, 2015

SPECIAL GUEST: Adriann Philby of Ambrosia Wines, featuring some of her Italian Wine Portfolio. Adriann has been here before, and Ambrosia now handles some of the “Small Vineyards” Wines, as well as some of the wines of Selva Cappuzza, a winery in the Veneto Region we stayed at on one of our small group journeys in Spring of 2012.

We’ll taste an array of several whites and some fantastic reds from various regions throughout “the boot”. Join us, January 16th, Friday, (as usual)  And meet Adriann from Ambrosia Wines…quite knowledgeable and a bit of a hoot!  She does some voices for TV shows…she has a rather interesting voice…

January 2nd, Friday (again)  “HAIR OF THE DOG”

Is it too soon to return to the tasting “Conga Line”???  Nahhh! When they say, “here’s a little hair of the dog that bit ya” they’re talking about those who, perhaps, overindulged a bit, and needing something to make the withdrawals a little less painful. Of course, our Wine Seller® bunch would never venture outside the realm of moderation…right?  So let’s do some “Mutt Reds”.

Non Pedigreed Red Blends that would be outside the realm of some of the traditionally sanctioned blends such as Bordeaux; Chianti and Rhone. Blends that push the winemaker’s creativity and speak more to a “Damn the Torpedos” discipline. (or lack thereof) HAPPY NEW YEAR  And here’s a touch of the “hair of the Dog that bit ya”

December 19th, Friday (as usual) CHAMPAGNE & “BUBBLIES”

Perhaps THE most anticipated tasting of the year!  We will open and pour an array of delicious Bubblies. Everything from REAL FRENCH CHAMPAGNE to Prosecco from Northern Italy, Cava from Spain, and some fantastic top quality Domestic Bubblies too!

it’s Port Townsend..and it’s not alway stormin’..so let’s taste some fantastic Port and Portuguese wines.
